Summary Of Ideas And Research
After exploring and carefully analysing the different genres of Horror film that we could pursue- we have collectively decided to create a Supernatural Horror film opening. We feel that this will allow us to incorporate a wider range of themes and will give us more creative freedom than, for example, a Body Horror might do.
We have, at this stage, formed a basic plot line for our film opening:
A young teenage girl is walking through a scenic forest, taking photos on a modern, professional camera. As she is looking through her camera she sees a blood spot on a leaf but when she lowers the camera to look above it the blood spot has disappeared; she can only see it through the camera. Looking through the camera once again she sees a bruised hand behind a tree, walking towards it she sees a dead beaten body. She screams and stumbles falling on the floor. With the camera she shakily pans the forest looking for anything out of place and notices a subtle trail of photos of herself. Inspecting the photos she discovers that the photos are of her in various moments of her past and the last photo, pinned on the tree, depicts her looking at the photos in the present. She slowly turns around and the music fades to become silent as she scans the forest. Through her camera she sees nothing but when she looks above it the creature jumps at her and she screams.
We did consider setting our opening in 17th century Massachusetts, in reference to the Salem witch trials, to follow a plot line in relation to that. However, after further research- we found that films set in the distant past are harder for an audience to relate to, especially the 15+ teenagers we are targeting with our film opening. We also realised that our opening would become too complex, and we would lose a lot of time trying to make our opening time-accurate. Therefore, we concluded that using modern setting would not only be easier for us, but more accessible and enjoyable for our target audience.
We have been inspired by the film openings we deconstructed as part of our research, and that will influence our own work. From our analysis of characters from both Scream and Nightmare On Elm Street, we have been able to form a basic idea of how we wish to present our female victim. Although our opening will not necessarily be a Slasher, we have certainly taken inspiration from aspects of the genre when it comes to characterisation. In the Slasher genre, it is typical for the first victim to be a flirtatious or promiscuous woman- who does not follow the moral expectations of the society she exists within. This concept will influence our own work, as some of the photos will include our victim in somewhat revealing clothing, with men the captions on the photos will reveal aren't her boyfriend. Her infidelity will arguably be the cause of her death, in keeping with this concept borrowed from the Slasher Horror genre.
Small details of our plot will most likely be altered and changed as we continue our research, but we are confident in our initial idea as we believe it will allow us to access a variety of different aspects of production, which will hopefully lead to us receiving a high mark for our finished work.
