The following are the results to our survey, all from young people 18+ - our target audience.

Which would you most prefer to see in a Supernatural Horror?

All of the above

Our first question showed that the majority of our audience wanted a mix of both physical and supernatural horror, though the supernatural was more popular than the physical. The gore and jump scares were equally popular with our audience, so will both feature in our opening- but less prominently than the supernatural aspects of our film. We will accentuate the effect these supernatural events have on the audience by coupling them with parallel music and appropriate lighting.
Q2

How do you think the first victim in a Supernatural Horror should look?

  • Scared
  • Irrelevant
  • They should always be a weak/feeble character. Or very vulnerable
  • Normal
  • Innocent
  • An ordinary, quite bland character with dull clothing therefore she isn't the one who is expected to have anything to happen to her
  • Particularly vulnerable
  • Vulnerable
  • Slutty- they're deserving of what happens to them
  • Regular/Mary Sue/Could be anyone
These are the answers that we received from the people we surveyed. The majority of them thought that the victim should be vulnerable, but similar to the audience. This supports the idea that we had for the characterisation of our victim, as we wanted to be able to use her as a representation of the audience. We will take the opinions given to us into consideration when finding an appropriate costume for our victim, who should be dressed in simple clothing popular for girls her age.

What type of music do you think should be used to build tension in a Supernatural film? Instruments etc.

Classical
Orchestral
Low pitched orchestra music to create an ominous ambience
Loud music
Violins
Drums, triangle or any other high pitched instrument
sting instruments and a crescendo of sounds
Dissonance/minor key to instill fear/fright
strings
Strings, sombre, dark

Our third question dealt with the music element of our opening, as we were unsure as to what type of music we should use, consistently 'creepy' music, or to gradually build tension with music- initially using calm, simple music to give a false sense of security to the audience. Our target audience's responses have suggested that we should use predominantly stringed instruments and conform to the conventions of supernatural horror films to build tension. We've taken this on board with our music choices, also choosing to gradually build with this music to help heighten tension and create anticipation for the concluding attack.

Our fourth question (below) helped us to decide how to characterise our Supernatural villain, which also helped us to design an effective costume and SFX design for our villain. The responses we received also helped us decide how much thought to put into the separate elements of our villain's presentation- e.g lighting etc. The majority of our surveyed audience felt that a villain having supernatural powers made them more threatening than a physical weapon, as well as a grotesque SFX. We've designed and planned these aspects of our villains characterisation, taking into consideration our survey responses.

What lighting should be used in a supernatural horror opening?

Answer Choices
Responses

High key, bright, warm lighting- to create a false sense of security
70%

Low key, dull, cold lighting- to establish the genre and build tension
30%

As for lighting- the majority of our target audience stated that they wanted a film opening to use high key, 'warm' lighting, to create a false sense of security which contrasts the rest of the film's horror. We will reflect this in our opening, using natural daylight to contrast the horrific fate of our victim- therefore making the shocking ending have a greater impact on our audience.
