Day 2 - Filming
Day 2 - Filming
Day 2 filming started off with us waking up at 5am. (Due to the nature of our opening we wanted a time lapse of the sun rising in the forest so we had to get up early to film it) We first met at Maria's house and began the SFX makeup on myself. The final result is posted below. Because the process took almost two hours, we recorded a time lapse. To achieve this gruesome look, we took shredded tissue and with latex plastered it onto my face and then covered it with foundation. We then ripped the tissue up and blotted fake blood and red and black paint around the tissue to create the effect of ripped skin. Finally, we decided to do a 'stitched mouth effect' where Maria poked holes within the tissue and threaded string to create the illusion that my mouth was sown shut.
After the makeup was complete, we headed down to the forest that surrounds River Shuttle in Bexleyheath and set up. At this point we were slightly behind schedule but we managed to record a time lapse of the sun rising. Throughout the day whilst we were wandering around the forest, the sun kept hitting the trees and surrounding plants at angles that we particularly liked. So we decided to film/ take some pictures of it to edit them into a short montage later as part our establishing shot.
Our first shots included our actress, Charlotte, walking around the forest, taking pictures and inspecting the plants. As Maria was filming this, Jess and I were preparing the polaroid photos and hanging them in the surrounding trees. After all the shots of Charlotte walking and her looking into the camera were done, we created a path for Charlotte to follow which lead to the tree. As we didn't really know how we would incorporate the polaroid photos into the opening, we spent some time shooting in various ways eg. zooming in and out of the photos and walking around them. We took this exact same approach for the last of our shots which was me as the supernatural creature. We have pan and tilt shots with me being the central object and we also shot some high and low angles as well as me looking directly into the camera and away again. I also suggested a 360 shot which turned out great. After all our footage was filmed, we cleaned the area, packed up and headed home.
What Went Well
As we already had a detailed schedule, the day went very smoothly. Everyone was organised and knew exactly where to be in each shot. Therefore, we managed to stay within our time frame. The weather was also on our side with the sun providing random rays of sunlight that we captured and cannot wait to incorporate into our montage. Due to the pressure of the time frame, everyone was under pressure but we all managed to stay calm and collected and overall the day was a success.
Even Better If?
The lighting was our main challenge to overcome. Even though the lighting offered some good establishing shots to use in our montage, we had to be very careful when filming not to create any colour distortion. As we have no control over the natural lighting, it was brighter than we anticipated and it was hard to focus on an object when the camera was facing towards the sun. If we were to re-film, I suggest that we film inside as we would have a lot more control over the colour and intensity of the lighting. Reviewing our footage shows that some of our shots were either out of focus or focused in the wrong object. Therefore, it would have been better if we had filmed the same shot about three or four times to ensure that we had the shot that we wanted. The supernatural creature shots were the last ones we filmed. Because of this, the makeup had dried on my face and gone crusty, it was also very cold and it was beginning to set on my face, giving it a hard look. Although it turned out great on camera, it would have been even better to film these shots first as the makeup was fresh and very bloody.
