Typography
Typography is, according to the Oxford english dictionary, the style and appearance of printed matter; it is the 'art of procedure of arranging type' or 'processing data and printing from it.' Typeface, on the other hand, is a particular design of type and is often referred to as the 'voice of the page.'
Wijnhold conducted a study in 1997 in which he attempted to sum up the various aspects of typography in addition to the connections between them. Below is an image to sum up the results of his study.
Wijnhold particularly focussed on the semantic properties of typography; he explored how they can be distinguished into two sets of meaning.
The first is meaning attributed by association and suggests that the characters' shape can invoke a variety of emotions within a reader, subconsciously or not. This can only occur, however, when the reader is able to link the typeface with some kind of association, for example historical and/or cultural associations.
The second is aesthetic meaning which suggests that beauty is the only thing typography wants to achieve. This is as a result of the ideology that beholding beauty is already a satisfying emotional experience and therefore the connection between another experience is not required.
