Research Foucs: Sound
Initial Ideas And Research
Music in horror films play a large role in scaring the audience, for it is the music that builds tension and suspense both diegetic and non-diegetic. As a group we knew we wanted various string instruments to create an eerie and mysterious atmosphere. In listening to horror soundtracks on various music platforms such as 'The Conjuring' a crescendo of instruments, specifically strings and trumpet, accompanied by a jump scare of screen proves to be very effective and we decided we would like to incorporate something like this into our film opening. Music in horror films tend to be very unpredictable and create an atmosphere that immerses the viewer into the film which ultimately heightens the scare factor. This is one of our aims for the music in our film opening. Here are a few examples of where we got some inspiration from:
1. 'The Conjuring' creates a crescendo from the string and woodwind instruments accompanied by low voices which is effectively creepy. This unusual combination of instruments creates a scary atmosphere and could lead to a jump scare. As the music fades out, we discussed that maybe we could do something similar and add a loud burst of sound at the end to scare our audience. Another example of this is 'The Women In Black' soundtrack. This music is a little more repetitive but the addition of instruments creates an atmosphere of panic that something awful is about to occur.
2. This soundtrack from 'Mama' incorporates a short burst of string instruments along with unpredictable loud sounds that fade away and turn into soft eerie singing. We thought this would be especially effective when creating a scene of panic from an unknown entity. The addition of a new instrument each section also gives the audience an impression that this is leading up to an event.
3. This soundtrack from 'Insidious Chapter 2' is especially unusual and if done right can be very effective. The various strings and their range resembles someone screaming and the unpredictability of them provides an especially eerie feel. The simplicity of this track also means a lot could be used to fill in the gaps and as a group we came up with a few compositions that could turn out to be effective. We could even recreate this violin sound and mix it will another one of our soundtracks to create an unusual sound.
We also, thought about on screen non-diegetic sound that would be effective. Seeing as our film opening is set in a forest, we could play around with the sound of crows and various other birds as well as crunching leaves and heavy breathing. We wanted to create an atmosphere that keeps the audience in suspense until the very last moment. Silence within a horror film can be very effective also. If we first built up to a crescendo, followed by silence then have a loud sound after I believe it would truly terrify our audience.
