There are various pros and cons of choosing different genres to create a film opening. Each genre allows you to explore a range of interesting ideas and conventions, however each genre also has it's set backs.

Supernatural Horror

Supernatural horrors allow you to explore and discover a wide of interesting concepts and theories. Your initial ideas can be as creative as you want them to be and, to a certain extent, limitless. However, a supernatural horror needs to be very effective in making the audience feel frightened. It also needs to have a high standard of actors and actresses. In addition, a good supernatural horror needs a large amount of research.

Body Horror

In creating a body horror film, it explores more adult themes and allows dark creativity that supernatural horrors would not have. Nonetheless, the set backs in body horrors are almost always makeup. In order to make a high quality realistic body horror film, the makeup skills required must be of a very high standard using high quality products which costs a large amount of money as well as time. Generally, body horrors have a very divided audience so it does not appeal to a wide range of people which can be a set back.

Slasher Films

Slasher films are one of the easiest films to create as they appeal to a very wide range of audiences and the creators can include and explore endless amounts of detail. However, the codes and conventions of slasher films are very precise and certain and although slasher films are relatively easy to create, a lot of time must be spent on attention to detail.

Zombie Films 

Zombie films generally has very generic plot lines with a few twists so it is easy to stay within the conventions but add creative elements. There are also different types of zombie films, for example horror zombie films (28 Days Later) and comedy zombie films (Shaun Of The Dead). But once again zombie films need to have very realistic make up that can cost a lot of money and take large amounts of time to apply. The zombie genre also needs high standard of actors and actresses to portray realistic zombies.

Romantic Comedy

Romantic comedies have the element of lighthearted typical romance which can be very interesting to create. But it has major set backs such as actors and actresses that understand comedy and have a high standard of acting. Furthermore, the audience can be very divided as some people find romantic comedies to be generally boring and cliche. It is the directors job to entice the audience and keep their interest which can be very hard to achieve.
