Film Certificate Research
The classification of films aims to protect children from unsuitable or harmful content in films and videos. The BBFC examine and rate films and videos before they are released. Below, I have outlined the seven types of film certificates currently used from 2002 - present.
Universal = Suitable for people of all ages. There will only ever be discriminatory language if it's clearly disapproved of. Violence, bad language and sexual behaviour must be kept extremely mild.

12 Accompanied/Advisory = Suitable for people aged 12+ as well as children under 12 who are accompanied by an adult.

12 = Suitable for people aged 12+.
12 or 12A = May include mild discriminatory language or behaviour. Moderate language - on occasion strong language permitted. Nudity is allowed however if in a sexual context must be brief and discreet. Moderate horror sequences and violence permitted.

15 = Suitable for people 15+. Discriminatory themes allowed. Drug use permitted but must not promote drug use. Strong language allowed. No constraints on nudity. Sexual activity may be portrayed however without specific detail. Strong threat and horror and violence may also be strong.
18 = Suitable for people 18+. Explicit sexual images may be permitted if done so in an educational way. Sex works allowed if only containing material which may be stimulated.
Restricted 18 = Suitable for people ages 18+ however are only available at sex shops and licensed cinemas. May contain explicit works of consenting sex and strong fetish material involving adults.
As a result of conducting this research, we have decided that our film opening would be rated an 18 due to the strong gory images and the fact that we specifically dwell on the infliction of pain or injury, which is not allowed in a 15 rated film.
