Finalised Character Profiles
First Victim - Charlotte Laker
After considering the results from our survey, and taking inspiration from our research into the Supernatural Horror genre, we have decided that our first victim should be entirely regular, and seemingly undeserving of her fate. This will help to reinforce the fear the audience feels, as they are led to believe that anyone could be victim to our Supernatural villain. To show her regularity, we dressed Charlotte in standard, everyday modern clothing common for girls her age.
Her clothing is simple and plain, common for girls her age. We chose to dress her in mainly bland colours to characterise her as regular, and her clothes are gender neutral, therefore able to represent the whole audience regardless of her gender, allowing them all to feel equal fear in response to her peril. The hat makes her seem youthful, adding to her innocence and effectively dispelling any idea that she has acted in a way which has led to this fate.
It is typical for Horror films to make the first victim a flirtatious, flighty blonde who has in some way gone against the conventions of her expectant society. By doing so, the audience are able to view her murder as somewhat justified, a punishment for her actions. However, we felt that it would be more effective if the first victim were presented as neutral and innocent, so that the audience are made to feel that they themselves could be victims in this reality, as the villain attacks with no apparent motive or pattern.
Supernatural Villain- Maria King
The results from our survey have shown that our target audience wanted a supernatural villain to be gory and have a disturbing appearance. Therefore, the SFX and makeup was the most important aspect of our supernatural villain's characterisation. Our villain is extremely grotesque, covered in bloody wounds covering the nose and mouth. This not only terrifies the audience, but makes the villain appear less human, due to the lack of normal facial features.
We chose to dress Maria in entirely black to help her blend in with the dark forest, so that when she appears it is more dramatic- keeping with the preferences of our target audience as stated in the research survey results. In the final shot of her (left), we also edited her eyes using photoshop to make them entirely black. This further supported our presentation of her as 'other', and highlighted her supernatural nature to the audience.
Most Supernatural Horror films will dress the villain in simple costuming, so as to accentuate the abnormal nature of their abilities. For example, the Paranormal Activity series villains are all normal, everyday people who become possessed by a higher power. The characters who suffer this are dressed very plainly (save for perhaps a blood stain), as it is their actions which inspire horror for the audience. However, when considering that our project was only a film opening, we knew that we would have a limited time frame to present our villain, and so it would be difficult to focus so much on her actions. Therefore, we decided that our villain should be presented as horrific through her costuming and makeup- creating a lasting effect on the audience in a small amount of time.
